THE TOP 209 SONGS OF 2009

    Written By: Kevin Kilker

First off I would like to thank everyone for taking time out to read my list. Now on my fifth year doing these charts I have seen them get progressively better as years go by, becoming more and more balanced as my music tastes continue to develop. This year was no exception, after sifting through a record 613 songs only to cut 2/3 of them to make this year end list the most competitive and ultimately best one released yet! But then again it is all about opinion, so while I may think this is the best year end list yet it ultimately falls on your opinions to determine whether or not it truly is. 2009 was an interesting year in music, slow to start but picking up in a big way in the second half of the year, it featured some tragic events, some surprising hits and misses, along with some amazing musical breakthroughs. In the end it was a great close to the first decade of the new millennium, and brings a high level of excitement for what’s in store for the next 10 years!

    HOW THE LIST IS COMPILED

First off regardless as to how I decided to rank these songs it does ultimately boil down to MY opinion and expertise, so Im sure no one will be 100% satisfied with the list and they shouldn’t be, although I try to be as non biased and equal as possible. Still, if you disagree with a track or several you can feel free to let me know about it, but in the end I will not change anything nor take your opinion into account. So in other words, you can talk shit on it all you want, but I will care 0% about what you think.
First off in order for a song to make the list it had to be officially released as a single. Had I not done that I would be working on this list well into next year, and therefore defeating purpose. Also, you will see several songs that were technically released last year, however if the song made a bigger impact in 2009 than it did in 2008 then that was taken into consideration as well. The list was compiled based on several different areas of musical expertise: Critical praise, popularity, indie credibility, crossover success, my opinion, your opinions combined in endless ways to determine where exactly a song would end up on the list. Also, certain criteria that made one song appear on the list may be completely different than the next song above or behind it. For example, a song like M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” (used because it was featured on 2008’s list) had everything working for it, but her ability to cross over into several genres successfully as what ultimately gave her the head up above the rest, but a song like Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” relied heavily on the massive popularity the song had achieved. In the end the yins balance with the yangs, and the list is therefore compiled in a manner that is as fair as possible. In the first few years I worked on these list there would occasionally be a song that wouldn’t make the list because I simply forgot to put it on there, but over the last few years that has been worked on to avoid such a confusion. Simply put, if a song that you like on there isn’t there then chances are it didn’t make the cut and won’t even with your arguing, so don’t bother. Either way, I hope you enjoy the list and although I may not change anything based on your opinions I am still interested in hearing feedback, so please let me know what you think. And of course, enjoy the list!

Twilight brought this experimental group to the forefront, but don’t let that fool you…

    100. Flo Rida feat. Ke$ha- Right Round

It’s hard to take a song like D.O.A.’s classic 1980’s staple “You Spin Me Round” and make it your own, but Flo Rida totally takes a 2009 approach, resulting in fast, booty poppin beats and catchy choruses.

    99. Kid Cudi feat. Kanye West and Common- Make Her Say

    95. Incubus- Black Heart Inertia

The thing that sets Incubus apart from the rest is Brandon Boyd’s unique lyricism. And its no surprise that this promotion single off their Greatest Hits collection would be any different. And it’s not. And it rocks.

    94. Michael Buble- Haven’t Met You Yet

This generation’s Frank Sinatra, Buble typically covers the classics along with current hits, but he decides to release another original to lead his new album, resulting in this ode to finding true love, but just not yet. Story of my life.

    92. Jason DeRulo- Whatcha Say

    91. Kanye West feat. Mr. Hudson- Paranoid

This, in my opinion, was the overall example of what he wanted to do with his R&B, Auto Tune heavy 808’s and Heartbreaks album. And with Kanye’s always great beats behind it, it’s a shame it was released after the CD’s prime

    90. Taylor Swift- White Horse

This song from Swift’s hit sophomore CD is a beautiful, understated ballad that showcases her skill with a lyric and shines a spotlight on her signature heart-on-her-sleeve vocals

    89. Ingrid Michaelson- Maybe

    88. Linkin Park- New Divide

    86. Keri Hilson feat. NeYo and Kanye West- Knock You Down

Hilson switched it up for her third single, and went from sexual and seductive to love struck and giddy. Appearances by NeYo and *GASP* Kanye West add different perspectives on the same subject of love

    85. Jordin Sparks- Battlefield

This American Idol veteran always seems to fight the hard battles to the top, with low album sales to boot. This explosive mid tempo ballad was one of her harder journeys to the top ten, and unjustly so

    84. Anthony Hamilton- The Point of it All

This was somewhat a return to prominence for R&B artist Hamilton, who received some of the best critical praise since his 2003 official debut. The title track is slow and sexy, while Hamilton’s vocals match the mood

John Mayer evokes a James Taylor style vibe with his latest track, an unabashed take on a care free attitude with everything from getting stoned, having sex, or going on vacation. Celebrity never sounded so quaint

    77. James Morrison feat. Nelly Furtado- Broken Strings

His most successful track to date, this track offers two of the most vulnerable performances yet from each artist, venting an obvious metaphor for the struggles at the close of a relationship beyond repair

    76. Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johannsen- Relator

Pairing up for a CD, this upbeat, peppy tune was far and away its best moment, with Johannsen’s voice adapting to a lower coo to Yorn’s higher confident replies over a catchy guitar riff

    75. Drake feat. Eminem, Lil Wayne and Kanye West- Forever

In the vein of last year’s “Swagga Like Us,” Drake recruits an A list of rap and hip hop royalty, making it undeniable to deny and impossible to resist, working with rather than against one another

    74. Lady Antebellum- Need You Now

For their sophomore release, Lady Antebellum’s singers switch roles, putting the mellower male Kelly in the lead and allowing female lead Scott to follow his relatable tale of breaking up and regretting it later

    73. Wilco- You Never Know

Critical indie darlings Wilco came into 2009 with one of their best albums, being led by this upbeat and decidedly mainstream single. It still maintains its identity and is decidedly addicting

    72. Robbie Williams- You Know Me

Robbie Williams returns to his roots for this 50’s era tune, combining his older style of music made popular by combining Sing When You’re Winning with its swing tribute Swing When You’re Winning. The results is pop bliss

    71. The Dead Weather- I Cut Like a Buffalo

Jack White’s OTHER other band provide a great track that properly demonstrates what the White Stripes would sound like with a full band and a female singer. And *shocker* it still kicks ass

    70. Mika- We Are Golden

After a very successful debut, Mika followed it up with a more flamboyant, care free pop record filled with over the top pop hooks and defiant lyrics. Could be the angst anthem of the year

    69. Rise Against- Savior

Rise Against’s success continued with every single they released, but this was the highlight of the year, maintaining their hard rock credibility while slowly building a huge following behind it. An almost epic hard rock tune

    68. David Guetta feat. Akon- Sexy Bitch

Electronic artist David Guetta had his big breakthrough across the globe (even in the US) with this tune filled with old school style techno beats that bring Darude to mind, along with featuring Akon on vocals.

    67. Green Day- Know Your Enemy

Although obviously relying heavily on their previous smash American Idiot, Green Day still bring out the fresh, politically driven hooks that spread like H1N1, proving their place among the rock elite

    66. Pearl Jam- The Fixer

Upon first listen, you could swear it was a new Eddie Vedder project, but in fact it is Pearl Jam at their most mainstream, which would mean career suicide by some but its unapologetic attitude drives it to the core, and wins you over

    65. Michael Franti and Spearhead- Say Hey (I Love You)

Long time music veteran Michael Franti wrote the chorus of this song on the mirror of his bathroom just after a shower. Who knew this optimistic and very addictive single would catapult him to huge heights

    64. Mastodon- Oblivion

Backed by one of the best albums of the year, this lead single from Mastodon is a wonderment of heavy metal organization, leaving a sound both intense and menacing, but ultimately curious.

    63. Maxwell- Pretty Wings

R&B made a seemingly large comeback in 2009, led by a slew of veterans staging career comebacks, but none was greater than Maxwell. This track offers all the heart wrenching emotion and raw intensity you would expect from him

    62. Dave Matthews Band- Why I Am

Certainly made to become one of DMB’s next great live singles, “Why I Am” is a happy, energized tune that is easy to listen to while singing or aloud or as background filler. And one of their best songs in over 5 years

    61. Mos Def- Life in Marvelous Times

This hip hop veteran wanted to bring back a certain sense of nostalgia on his latest disc, a vision that would ultimately pay off in a big way, arguable becoming his best album yet. The lead single was a great example in this

    60. Basement Jaxx- Raindrops

Their strongest single in years, “Raindrops” brilliantly merges psychedelic with disco, the end result being an exotic confection laced with rock melodies and a killer bass line

    59. A.R. Rahman feat. M.I.A.- O Saya

Why this song did not win the Oscar over his more mainstream friendly “Jai Ho,” “Saya” is much grittier and true to form when envisioning the crowded streets of India. An appearance from M.I.A. clinches its hard exterior

    58. The Used- Blood on my Hands

Although their latest album was a dud both critically and commercially, their lead single was an all out rock explosion, with an air of extreme throughout. In the end it is sad this song got mostly looked over

    57. Matisyahu- One Day

Upon first listen, I was let down by this almost inspirational mainstream track. But upon further listening you begin to see what Matisyahu was trying to do, which was evoke Bob Marley for current times. Ultimately it worked great.

    56. Anberlin- Feel Good Drag

Once this song got ahold of you, it rarely let go. That is why this song was on the modern rock charts literally all year, eventually reaching the zenith in spring. I dare you to listen to it and not like it

    55. 30 Seconds to Mars- Kings and Queens

After legal battles threatened to shelve the CD Frontman Jared Leto certainly had a mission he wished to fulfill with this latest record, which was to grab your attention, which he did by rocking it out epically and making choruses impossible to sing along over and over again

    54. Radiohead- These are my Twisted Words

Proof that they don’t need to release CD’s to make great music, Radiohead released a two song single, which included this trance like track, in a manner only Radiohead could deliver on

    53. Death Cab for Cutie- Meet Me on the Equinox

The only good thing to come out of the Twilight series of films was the soundtracks, and this is the one to beat, lead by Death Cab’s dark and gloomy single that fit the film perfectly, along with rock radio and fans as well

    52. Kelly Clarkson- Already Gone

Though this newest CD found Kelly getting her happy groove back, this hard core ballad tears at your heartstrings, backed by a beat from super ballad producer Ryan Tedder. You can try and get the heart strings back, but it may be hard

    51. Julian Casablancas- 11th Dimension

Taking a step away from The Strokes and into his own electronic friendly world, Julian Casablancas released a solo CD rivaling all his other Strokes members solo works. With 80’s synth beats and a great hook, it would fit well with 1985

    50. Lady Gaga- Bad Romance

The always eccentric Lady Gaga had already become a superstar thanks to her hit debut The Fame, but then she wasted no time, and released another 8 song album in the fall. “Bad Romance” easily leads the Fame Monster, with a great premise and a instantly catchy beat that stay in your head for days

    49. Weezer- (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To

Don’t let the long winded song title fool you…Weezer decided to get a little help from their friends, recruiting other producers and bands to help with the writing on this latest record. “I Want You To” captures the innocence of the 50’s and 60’s while oozing a charming geekishness only frontman Rivers Cuomo can pull off

    48. Jay Z feat. Alicia Keys- Empire State of Mind

Jay Z’s ode to his beloved Big Apple progressively grew in popularity before becoming his first ever solo #1 single. Backed by piano and vocals by Alicia Keys, “Empire” is a poignant tribute to a city that’s been through hell and back.

    47. Them Crooked Vultures- New Fang

Easily the greatest super group to come out since Audioslave’s first album, Them Crooked Vultures combines Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. Together, they combine their prior bands’ sound seamlessly resulting in a beautiful, raw rock record that stays on replay

    46. Raekwon feat. Ghostface Killah and Method Man- New Wu

The title says it all in this instance. Released off his sequel to the critical gem Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Raekwon makes a record that may as well have been Wu Tang. Featuring members of the Wu on several track including this one, Raekwon has reinvented himself and brought the Wu back to the world once more

    45. Susan Boyle- I Dreamed a Dream

The plain and frumpy Scottish sensation Boyle first took the world by storm at the end of last year with this sensational track off Les Miserables, surprising absolutely everyone with a sensational, sweeping voice. She may not have won the X Factor, but her album has not left the top spot since debuting there almost a month ago

    44. The Roots- How I Got Over

It seems as though settling down was a good thing for hip hop legends The Roots. After accepting a gig as the backup band for Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show the crew continued to work on new tracks, including this title track that brings the emotional power that The Roots have seemingly perfected over time

    43. Robbie Williams- Bodies

After a personal unraveling and a career slide, Robbie Williams checked himself into rehab, got clean, and took time off to reflect. His return to the scene has been spectacular, led by this sensational mid tempo song filled with William’s classic questioning and wit, reminding us of the days of old

    42. Neko Case- This Tornado Loves You

Initially the weather nerd in me was attracted to this song at the start. Upon further listening, it is an amazing, mid tempo indie gem that a veteran like Neko Case has crafted brilliantly. Her breathy voice brings some raw emotion into it, until it metaphorically twirls around you, much like a tornado. See how I did that?

    41. Jason Aldean- She’s Country

The time was right for a country anthem like this one to come out. And with Aldean’s dominant and confident voice backing it, it instantly became the #1 song for country girls everywhere, even beating Taylor Swift…ok, ok MAYBE I am going overboard, but this is still a fun ride worth taking over and over again

    40. Adam Lambert- For Your Entertainment

It was unfortunate that the controversial shroud kept many from listening to Lambert’s solo debut, which was led by its title track. The song has a peculiar but hypnotizing beat that draws you in and keeps you interested. Throw in Lambert’s astounding vocal range behind it, and you’re hooked and can’t help but dance

    39. Cage the Elephant- Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked

These backwoods infused rockers broke through in the early part of this year with this catchy tune about evildoers and the reasons for their ways. Frontman Mathew Shultz’ voice sound like Jack White, which fits with the country style guitar hook. Still I did like this song a lot more…back when it was The Raconteurs. I keed.

    38. Green Day- 21 Guns

Easily the best single off of 21st Century Breakdown, Green Day proves they can write an epic album and an even better epic rock ballad, as evident when “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” exploded onto the scene in 2004. This track relies heavily on the latter, which worked almost as well but just not quite.

    37. Eminem- 3AM

Although Eminem may not have started off on the right foot proving his verbal dominance amongst the rap world, “3AM” showed us that he was still very much that sick and twisted character we thought he was. Though it was kind of too little too late its impossible to deny this song’s evil genius

    36. Bat for Lashes- Daniel

British female singer Bat for Lashes really dug deep for this synthy and mystical tune. It almost has a sort of Stevie Nicks quality to it, while her velvety voice remains as enchanting as ever. “Daniel” is easily a career high mark for the singer, giving us excitement for her future work

    35. Lily Allen- The Fear

Lily Allen had a great year, and it all started with this first single off of It’s Not Me, It’s You. Shifting her musical gears towards a more pop friendly variety while maintaining her tongue in cheek sarcasm and wit, “The Fear” was an amazing single that proved that she could change her styles without losing credibility.

    34. Calvin Harris- Ready for the Weekend

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris made a fast rise in ranks over the course of the year. Fresh off of a #1 collaboration last year with Dizzee Rascal, Harris emerged with his own solo CD, and this single was his best work yet. The song brings out shades of The Clash while morphing into 90’s style beats and catchy hooks, in other words amazing

    33. Grizzly Bear- Two Weeks

The vision that the ambitious pop folk outfit Grizzly Bear has had for years finally came true with this song. The cool thing about this single is that is isn’t afraid to be pretty, and it does so unapologetically and defiantly. And it rightfully succeeds in its vision, becoming their most successful

    32. Wilco feat. Feist- You and I

Wilco has been in the music business for 15 years now, and after releasing their self titled 7th album they achieved things they never have before. “You and I” marked the first time they released a duet, teaming with Feist, resulting in one of their most poignant and sweeping songs they ever recorded.

    31. Lady Gaga- Paparazzi

“Paparazzi” is a song more clever than it puts on. Lady Gaga’s closest thing to a ballad it actually doubles as a metaphor for fame seekers and celebrity. The song took off after her shocking performance at the MTV VMA’s, and her video really brought out the strange persona that is Lady Gaga.

    30. Alice in Chains- Check My Brain

After former frontman Layne Staley’s death in 2002, it seemed like a bad idea to reform with a new one, but all doubts came to a rest when they released their first mainstream single in 9 years. The song is a no holds barred reminder of their past work, and new frontman William DuVall sounds eerily similar to Staley. It’s liked he lived on through him.

    29. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Zero

Everything about “Zero” is pure modern rock brilliance, in the sense that it is almost a dance song. Starting off with a simple synth beat, it slowly progresses in both Karen O’s vocals and in the music itself, before turning into an ecstatic, multi-climactic super
Jam that brought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs back to prominence

    28. Foo Fighters- Wheels

Rock’s finest wine came out with a greatest hits compilation, and included this Tom Petty jam to promoted. It was a surprising but welcome shift in gears for the Foo, with lead singer Dave Grohl giving off a nostalgic feel. It was bittersweet too, as they announced a much needed break soon afterwards.

    27.Amadou and Mariam- Sabali

Amadou and Mariam are quite an interesting pair. They are a Malian blues group, who both happen to be blind and married to one another. After gaining a buzz in 2005 they reignite that flame with this Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) produced tune, putting together an interesting combination of Malian blues and dance beats.

    26. Silversun Pickups- Panic Switch

One of the most popular modern rock tracks of 2009, “Panic Switch” is a dark, epic track that manages to keep you going while seeming distant and morose, at times exploding into a modern rock rant. It turned Silversun Pickups into a household name, and the single has yet to leave the Top 20 of the Modern Rock charts.

    25. Kanye West- Heartless

At first Kanye West’s 2008 album 808’s and Heartbreaks was a bit of a disappointment, trading rap hooks for auto tune R&B. But “Heartless” was a jilted and addictive tale of heartbreak and bad romances, and it helped to relegate his vision. Although he would go on to make a fool of himself at the MTV VMA’s by interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, it is undeniable that his music abilities are still very much intact.

    24. La Roux- Bulletproof

One of the best dance songs of the year came from a British newcomer who comes across as a robotic version of Annie Lennox with both her appearance and sound. A full on 80’s synth dance party, this track is fast, ferocious and completely loveable. It’s a bright, bouncy slice of Yazoo style electro pop, with a chorus very immediate and hypnotizing with a robotic sound all throughout. Simply put, this is a brilliant song from a band with an enormously bright future.

    23. The All American Rejects- Gives You Hell

Though not as popular this time around, The All American Rejects was able to put out a pop rock gem in “Gives You Hell.” A song that hits you like a virus and infects you at the most surprising of times. It was a gradual hit, eventually reaching the top 5 in the US, with the same fun witty style they perfected a few years back. It is clear they have perfected the formula for what a good pop rock song should sound like

    22. Britney Spears- 3

Spears reemerged last year in one of the greatest comebacks of all time. After thoroughly promoting her comeback album Circus, Spears recorded this track for her latest singles collection, and it became the first song to debut at #1 in more than three years. A sleek, swift dance song about having a three way, Spears has become the queen of seductive pop. And this was great proof.

    21. Beyonce- Halo

We all know how talented Beyonce is, and how powerful her vocal chops are. Teaming with super ballad pioneer Ryan Tedder (One Republic), we find Beyonce at her most raw and vulnerable, giving us an epic power ballad that tears at your heart and doesn’t let go. Whether it was written for her longtime beau Jay Z, or just written for the masses, it became one of Beyonce’s more memorable performances and one of the best ballads of the year, if not THE best.

    20. Thom Yorke- Hearing Damage

In a surprising move, Thom Yorke agreed to write a song for the new Twilight soundtrack. It turned out to be one of Yorke’s greatest achievements as a solo artist, and would hold up amongst Radiohead’s greatest as well. Starting with an irregular beat that instantly hooks you with curiosity, it gradually builds into a pulse driven electronic assault, all the while maintaining Yorke’s classic distant sound that you constantly try to crack. Its somber tone matched the soundtrack’s sound perfectly, and is easily its best song.

    19. Lily Allen- Fuck You

This is one of the best tell of anthems of its time. A blunt, to the point tune delivered with a wit only Allen can pull off, “Fuck You“ became a huge hit overseas despite the expletive ridden choruses and bridges. The background piano evokes an obvious irony compared with the tell off subject matter, and its anti gay bashing stance cemented her popularity amongst the gay community as well. Despite its expletive nature, however, the overall positive message seemed to rally above it all, and became one of Allen’s career high marks.

    18. Dizzee Rascal feat. Armand Van Helden- Bonkers

After finding success with the dance single “Dance Wiv Me” last year, British grime rapper Dizzee Rascal decided to dedicate some time pursuing the genre further. He pulled out all the stops, and for the first single recruited House music god Armand Van Helden. The result was an absolutely fantastic dance track that can only be described as absolutely hypnotic. Rascal’s rapid delivery matched the pulsating beat perfectly, and Van Helden is at his greatest, proving why he is so well respected amongst the techno community. In the end, Rascal achieved exactly what he was going for

    17. The Fray- You Found Me

Colorado’s The Fray have perfected the art of making a good piano driven rock ballad. After scoring massive success in 2006 with “How to Save a Life,” their lead single off their sophomore effort continued with the same formula as before, only more introspective and seemingly angry. Frontman Isaac Slade said this song was about having it out with God over all the hurt in his life and the world, and his vulnerability is evident throughout, especially in the chorus, where he ultimately finds what he was looking for. The song’s raw energy made it one of the year’s best, hitting the Top 10 in the US.

    16. Shinedown- Second Chance

To state it as simply as possible, “Second Chance” is an epic rock ballad about leaving everything you know to get a second chance at life. The extremely autobiographical lyrics provide frontman Brent Smith with a connection that is extremely apparent in his delivery. It also showcases his outstanding vocal range, which is a large reason why this otherwise generic rock ballad stands head and shoulders above the rest of them, landing them in the Top 10 of the Billboard charts and allowing them to cross over to different legions of music lovers. Over the top, yes, but incredibly heartfelt and relatable

    15. Animal Collective- My Girls

Experimental musicians Animal Collective have been making interesting and innovative music for almost a decade. When they released the first single off their immensely good album Merriweather Post Pavilion it was instantly apparent they were at their finest. “My Girls” is an extremely catchy and danceable ode to the bonds of family sung poignantly by frontman Panda Bear. It was the group’s first song that you ultimately wanted to play over and over again, and it achieves a milestone for the band

    14. Phoenix-1901

It’s hard for artists to teeter on the fence of change between albums, between trying to refine your sound and getting stuck in predictability, and at the same time between growth and overreach. Unless you’re French alternative rock group Phoenix, in which case you make it look really, really easy, and crank out more effortless and extremely catchy pop-rock and not only gaining more popularity but gaining it all over the globe, including the hardest market in the world, the United States, where it became a Top 10 hit on the modern rock chart and featured in several commercials.

    13. Kid Cudi- Day N Nite

Kid Cudi is a pioneer for the promising alternative hip hop genre. It’s almost as if his style is a sort of emo rap, and our first exposure to him was with this surprise smash. The beat is slow and basic, with keyboard crescendos and simple rhymes. But its simplicity was a welcome change for the mainstream world, and it should be praised for its broad appeal over many genres, primarily among dance music DJ’s as well as pop and urban radio. It made Kid Cudi a recognizable name amongst the hip hop world, and went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

    12. T.I. feat. Justin Timberlake- Dead and Gone

Although the entire premise behind his 2008 album Paper Trail was about owning up to your mistakes and redemption it was never more well put than on his fourth single, released early in the year. Featuring pop superstar Justin Timberlake, “Dead and Gone” was an emotional, heartfelt and personal track for T.I., and it is evident in his freestyles. Timberlake’s trademark vocals compliment the emotion perfectly, and together they create a hip hop super ballad that allows us to see into T.I.’s private life and his struggles to overcome his mistakes and move on a better man. And once he is released from prison in 2009, he will hopefully to continue echoing that sentiment

    11. Owl City- Fireflies

Owl City is a synth pop project from musician Adam Young. Started in 2007, he quickly gained a following before releasing Ocean Eyes earlier this year, and what happens after that is what every budding musician could ask for. “Fireflies” is a very likeable track. It maintains an innocence throughout, as it slowly gets more and more climactic with bubbly pop beats and keyboard riffs. It’s incredible catchiness caught on by years end, and the song spent two weeks at Billboard’s top spot, and like Kid Cudi, crossing over into several different genres. When you are able to do something like that, you know you must be doing your job right

    10. Black Eyed Peas- Boom Boom Pow

2009 was all about the Black Eyed Peas this year, as they discovered the perfect formula for making instant pop classics. Their first single off of their first CD in four years, “Boom Boom Pow” definitely delivers a one two dance punch. It starts off slow, before going into the electronic chorus and backbeats. Will.I.Am’s freestyles blend well amidst auto tune tinkering, and Fergie delivers her trademark raps with style and precision before the song goes into booty shaking mode halfway through the track. From that point on, it’s as if you have been possessed by the beat, and there was no escape, with robotic voices commanding you to let the beat rock. Easily one of the best dance tracks of the 2000’s

    9. 3OH!3- Don’t Trust Me

Colorado electro pop group 3OH!3 first started gaining notoriety on the Warp tour circuit a few years back. After gaining a devoted local following the made their breakthrough with this entertaining and often controversial single. But its not the chorus advising us not to trust ho’s that’s controversial but rather the bride, where they advise you to shut your lips, do the Helen Keller, and talk with your hips. Controversial, yes, but also absolutely clever and amazingly funny, with clever retorts and interesting insight on the female race. It would bring them instant fame and success, reaching the Top 10 in the US and many other countries

    8. Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Heads Will Roll

Many recognize “Zero” as the standout track from their absolutely fantastic album It’s Blitz!, and although it is an amazing single, it was “Heads Will Roll” that left mine rolling. A great keyboard background beat reminiscent of a spooky 1980’s synth B movie matched with Karen O’s commanding personality and brilliantly adaptable lyrics was what made this track impossible not to listen to at least twice…or three times…or twelve. It’s at a faster and more addictive pace than it’s predecessor single, although it did not achieve the same amount of success as “Zero” did, and unfortunately so. The music video was an interesting breakthrough in art direction that made the song transform into a movie. Either way, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are at their most perfect here.

    7. Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me

Sure, the concept is simple enough…Girl next door is in love with the popular boy…The popular boy is in love with the popular girl. Girl next door confesses love to popular boy. High school emotions ensue. But that is what makes Taylor Swift such a talented singer and songwriter. Her songs, regardless of what they are, tug at the strings of teenage girls everywhere because until this year Taylor Swift WAS a teenager…albeit one that can express herself very well. And at such a young age, Swift broke record after record for rewards, singles and album achievements. This became her biggest hit, reaching #2 on the Hot 100, but regardless of what single she releases it will undoubtedly be snatched up quickly by the teenage fan base that relate to her every word.

    6. The Lonely Island feat. T-Pain- I’m on a Boat

SNL cast member Andy Samberg had long been known for his comedic musical performances, often parodying rap songs. At the end of last year he decided to take his comedic musical troop The Lonely Island, featuring longtime friends and SNL writers Akiva Schaeffer and Jorma Taccone, and set out for mainstream America. And as a result they became one of the biggest YouTube sensations ever, and this song was the best of the best. A nautical rap talking about, well, being on a boat, the song was an absolute riot, and T-Pain’s almost self mocking cameo was one of the songs highlights, especially with his climactic declaration that he had relations with a mermaid. Hands down one of the funniest songs of the decade

    5. Black Eyed Peas- I Gotta Feeling

The Black Eyed Peas took no time to find a song to replace the immense success that it’s prior single, “Boom Boom Pow,” had achieved. The result was an astounding and record breaking moment in music history. The song’s beat is instantly infectious, and the overly sugary and optimistic outlook was a very welcoming presence in this time of economic depression. Sure, it isn’t the best song in the world, but it gave people hope and inspired others. It was featured just about everywhere and remade on YouTube incessantly. And it not only dethroned its previous single from the top after a 12 week run, it went on a 14 week run itself, shattering the record for the longest time on top of the singles chart by an artist or group, previously set in 2004 by Usher with 19 weeks. No big.

    4. MUSE- Uprising

MUSE’s largely awaited follow up to their 2006 US breakthrough Black Holes and Revelations was started off by this lead single, a rebellious and explosive rock revolt that declares we stand up for our rights and be victorious. They could not have picked a better single to leadoff their transition from up and coming rock group to superstar rock pioneers. “Uprising” is easily the best track off of The Resistance, and it not only became their first #1 on the Modern Rock Charts (where at last count it had remained for 15 weeks) but their first Top 40 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The synth heavy beat and dominating guitar riffs, along with Matthew Bellamy’s trademark coos, falsettos and declarations pave the way for future #1 singles to come. Finally, MUSE’s day in the US sun has come

    3. MGMT- Kids

No one could have anticipated experimental rockers MGMT achieving their most successful song with this one, an ode to childhood. The reason why this song worked was because the beat, along with the lyrical content, made you feel almost like a kid again. You relate to their every word, and it makes you look back at both the good and the bad with being a child. The innocent curiosity, the trial by error experimentation, all of it is piled into one uniquely catchy song that both touches and entertains you immensely. Sometimes a really good song, despite who it is made by, finds its way to the mainstream audiences based on just how good it was. And the long road MGMT climbed up until this point made it all worth it when “Kids” reached the Top 10 on the Modern Rock charts.

    2. Lady Gaga-Poker Face

Lady Gaga took the world by storm this year, and although her previous single “Just Dance” got her noticed, it was “Poker Face” that made her a household name. Gaga says this song is about her bisexuality, and based on its ambiguous beat and metaphorical lyrics about not being able to read her it certainly made the song that much sexier. It also had a certain air of mystery to it, making the song as a whole hard to read but easy to listen to. The song made it to the top of the charts all over the world, been referenced by several important figures, sampled famously already by Kid Cudi and even parodied on South Park, which is usually a good sign that you hit the big time. And that addictive beat and chorus will keep the song on people’s I Pods and on the charts for months to come.

    1. Kings of Leon- Use Somebody

What puts a song on my list at #1? Typically you need to have a lot of the factors (critical acclaim, popularity, cultural impact, crossover ability) working together in order to do so. Last year we had M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” at the summit of the year end list, as she properly demonstrated the winning combination of factors in order to achieve the feat. This year it belongs to the country twinged rock group Kings of Leon, and rightfully so. After spending years breaking big overseas but struggling to find success in their native homeland they released Only by the Night last year, and paired with the success of last year’s hit single “Sex on Fire” they were finally able to get the success in America they so rightly deserved. Once they had our attention they decided not to let go, and soon thereafter released “Use Somebody,” the ultimate rock ballad that is strangely enough epic and non epic at the same time. What makes this song work so well is lead singer Caleb Followill’s surprisingly raw and emotional voice, which in turn makes you feel the pain of his loneliness as soon as he starts to sing. It gives off a hipster style vibe as he cried for comfort with Springsteen style Ooo’s and Ohh’s in the background to really drive the emotion home. The progressive storm of guitars matched with Followill’s longing, lusty vocals help make it as catchy as “Sex on Fire” but much more emotional as well. Although many die hard fans were upset with the band’s decidedly mainstream direction with the song and album in general it can also be argued that they have sounded like this all along, but with them being at the high point of their career it can be easy to dismiss a great song as being a sell out. But the proof speaks for itself. Critics absolutely loved it, and with or without the die hard fans backing them it still reached all kinds of different people from all around the world, in turn allowing the song to break through the Modern Rock barrier and cross over to several other genres. It spent several weeks at #1 on the Modern Rock Chart, along with the Adult Top 40, while reaching the Top 10 on several different music charts, including a #4 peak on the Billboard Hot 100, easily their most successful single to date and reaching the same peak M.I.A. did last year with her year end chart topper. And although they may not be able to ever duplicate this kind of success again this song’s raw and vulnerable power will keep this song playing on radio stations for years and years to come. For a song about being lonely and being in need of some comfort it certainly doesn’t need to worry about a thing anymore. gaga
